Open supra-aural design means the headphones let sound escape, giving a more open natural sound while the earcups rest on top of the ears without completely covering them. High quality ear pads and headband are offered for comfortable extended usage while lightweight aluminum voice coils and diaphragm design bring high efficiency and detailed sound. The step down form these headphones in this series are the HD 435s which have a smaller Frequency Response and greater Total Harmonic Distortion(THD), and the step up from these are the HD 485s which have a greater Frequency Response and lower THD. These are all part of Sennheiser's Hi-Fi series which are for the most part open-backed headphones which are ideal for quiet listening environments where letting the sound 'breath' is essential(great for classical and/or live ensemble music).
